2023 Vision in the Rearview Mirror (and ’24 on the Horizon)

Posted by: Missouri Eye Institute in Blog on December 1, 2023

As we approach 2024, it’s exciting to think about how LASIK and eye care have advanced in the past year and where technology could take us in the new year, new decade, and beyond.

Here are several ways vision care improved over the years and a few trends that could influence better care in the years to come:

1. Continued advances in laser technology

LASIK laser technology has continued to evolve, leading to more precise treatment of the delicate structures of the eye. Specifically, the broader adoption of the femtosecond laser has led to better outcomes for LASIK patients.

2. More customized LASIK treatments

Improved diagnostic tools and software have given LASIK surgeons the ability to more precisely tailor treatments to the needs of each patient. This means patients can expect to achieve the best possible results for their unique vision, even in complex cases.

3. Greater accessibility to LASIK and LASIK alternatives

Thanks to advances in LASIK technology, more people than ever are eligible for this life-changing procedure. This includes more people with high prescriptions and astigmatism who may not have been considered candidates in the past. In 2024, we may see new advances that help even more patients achieve their vision goals.

4. Increased focus on preventive eye care

In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on preventive eye care. Patients are getting the message to see their eye doctor for regular checkups, even if they don’t have any vision problems. This is important because many eye diseases can be detected and treated early before they cause vision loss.

5. New treatments for eye diseases

In addition to advances in LASIK technology, we can also expect to see new treatments for eye diseases in 2024. For example, advances in gene therapy may eventually help cure or slow the progression of eye diseases such as macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa.

6. Artificial intelligence

(AI) is already being used in a variety of ways in the medical field. It’s possible scientists could soon harness the power of AI to help surgeons plan and perform their procedures.

7. New vision correction treatments for presbyopia

Presbyopia is a common age-related condition that causes difficulty focusing on near objects. Researchers are working on developing new treatments, including improved laser surgery techniques, which could help patients with this condition. Several presbyopia treatments are already available, and patients are raving about the results of these procedures designed to help restore their reading vision and sharpen their eyesight at multiple distances.

These are just a few examples of the eye care options that will continue to evolve in 2024 and beyond. It’s an exciting time to be a patient, and we look forward to serving you and your vision needs in the new year.
